About the work
A couple of years ago, I realized I had a fixation with gardens and, within gardens, flowers. The garden represents childhood, abundance, freedom, and also mystery. Flowers embody beauty, and by existing at this extreme, they can equally represent ugliness. They are vibrant yet dead, open yet hidden. This series is inspired by botanical studies, which, in their own way, encapsulate this duality when representing nature—a duality that I find to be the perfect reflection of this concept.

Bio Karla Read (B. Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, 1988) is a photographer and director based in Mexico City. Her work explores human nature through the body in natural settings. After studying and working in Buenos aires, Karla stablished herself in her homeland , where she developed personal work concerning her afro Caribbean lineage and culture. During this time she collaborated with various art galleries, exhibiting her work between Santo Domingo and New York.
