Mónica Lapaz (1983) is a visual artist native to Santo Domingo, where she currently resides. She obtained a degree in Architecture from UNIBE (2006) and is a graduate of the School of Design in Altos de Chavón where she studied fine arts and illustration (2011). Through drawing and painting, she delves into the complex interplay between various aspects of urban life in Santo Domingo. Her background in architecture informs her exploration of how the built environment influences the people who inhabit it. She seeks to depict the contrasting elements and tensions within her surroundings, blending them with a somewhat idealized vision of the city, a vision that resonates with her. This process allows her to create works that reflect both the corporeality and her subjective interpretation of the urban landscape.
