José Morbán (b.1987 Dominican Republic) is a visual artist who lives and works in Santo Domingo. He’s a graduate from the School of Design at Altos de Chavón in La Romana, Dominican Republic. His recent exhibitions include Tropical Is Political: Caribbean Art Under The Visitor Economy Regime at Americas Society, New York; Pal Patio at Calderón Gallery, New York City; Landmark at KM 0.2, San Juan, Puerto Rico; one month after being known in that island at Kulturstiftung Basel H. Geiger, Basel. He has been an artist in residency at Art Omi (2021), Ghent, NY; Pagoda Imaginaria (2022), Ciudad de Guatemala; and Corsicana Artist & Writers Residency (2023), Corsicana, Texas. His work is part of the collections: JP Morgan Chase, Centro Eduardo León Jiménes and Phelps-Cisneros. He works from found photographs, documents and other memorabilia to try to make sense of the history of the place now called Dominican Republic, as well as the Caribbean.
