On March 16, 2023 we inagurated our second pop up gallery in Santo Domingo. On this ocassion we exhibited artworks from 9 different emerging artists from the Latin American Region that our part of the platform.
This second edition offered the public 32 different pieces ranging from photography, work on paper, sculptures, textile art and drawings. These were distributed amongst 4 sections and will be available to the public until march 26 in the Ciudad Colonial.
The main gallery is dedicated to expose a variety of the works of Dominican artist Manuel Mera, the selection showed the evolution of the artist. Mera explained that his works are a reflection of human dialogue with the multi reality of the digital mediums in a world that is full of cientific advancements but also full of unresolved contradictions.
In the other galleries there is a selection of different Latin American artists which are part of the platform such as : Gabriela Farias, from Dominican Republic; Alexa Torres and Taeko Nomiya, from Mexico; James Bonachea, from Cuba; María Paula Suarez and Shadia Sabagh, from Colombia; and Mau Samayoa, from el Salvador.
On this ocassion we worked along with the Dominican curator Luis Graham Castillo, who expressed that the work of the artist is a type of reconstruction of scattered memory amongst the cummulative of images he is faced with. “Mera creates contemporary visions which are disruptive and unsettling”, he added.
Graham also explained that the exhibit marks three key moments in the development of the artist’s work. The show draws attention to his drawings, works on papers, and pictoric works that obey his most recent research about the relationship we establish with the multi reality offered through digital surroundings.
Finally, I would like to remind the reader that Catalysta seeks to present to the world Latin American artists of great talent. That opening night for us was a privilege to show the works of Mera and the other artists to the Dominican public and to voice their work.
